Great SoapFeb 13, 2009
By M. P. Taylor This mug soap is great and I would recommend it to anyone. It lathers up quickly, has a nice but not overwhelming scent, and leaves my face feeling great after each shave. Just one of these bars will last you quite a while, so a pack of 12 will definitely last you for months if not years.
Update (27 June 2009)
Since trying several other brands for the sake of experimentation, I'm still sticking with Van Der Hagen. I have purchased soap that does not lather up as quickly. I have also encountered soaps where the lather in my mug dries out between applications (I use a safety razor, multiple passes are required), but this soap doesn't need to be whipped up repeatedly if it sits for a while. And best of all, this soap rinses off my face with little water and it doesn't dry out my skin at all. Not sure why the other user complains of the smell, I've encountered products with much stronger scents and I find this one very mild. Besides, it rinses off so well you never smell it after you are finished.

Great ProductJan 19, 2010
By Steiner Guys, I've been wet shaving with a mug, soap and a brush for around 30 years. I have used Col. Conks, Colgate, Williams and Van Der Hagen shave soaps. Col. Conks are very good but kind of pricey in my book so I buy only Van Der Hagen.
It is economical, found pretty much everywhere and has a nice faint clean smell. It lathers real well and the lather remains throughout the shave. I use both, a safety razor and a straight razor and this soap ensures me a great shave!

NOT StinkyOct 01, 2009
By V. Ephrem
"V. Ephrem"
I read a previous review claiming that this shave cream is "stinky", and while I recognize that "stinky" is very subjective, I actually really like the subtle, clean (and NOT un-masculine) scent of this cream. I've actually caught my wife sniffing my badger brush and shave cream bowl (and I admit I often do the same). This product provides a great, smooth shave, with very good lather, and at a very reasonable price. I also like it better than Col. Conk as it doesn't melt with hot water, and I actually think it smells better. I haven't tried the other lower cost, available locally product, Williams, but I like the Van Der Hagen so much, there's no reason to go further.
Additionally, it can be found locally at a slightly higher price, but you don't have to pay shipping, buy in bulk, or wait for it to arrive in the mail. I've seen it at CVS, Walgreen, Target and Wal-mart. GREAT PRODUCT.

i love it, totally worth tryingSep 02, 2009
By J. Larson i bought this stuff at walgreens a few days ago, along with a Van Der Hagen brush. i had been wanting to try shaving soap, but could only find expensive stuff online, so this stuff appealed to me for testing purposes.
after two days of shaving with a mach 3, i'm sold. the best can cream i found was aveeno, and recently i bought some edge cream at costco. the edge cream, despite all the bling on the label, just sucks. the aveeno is okay, but i'd still get some irritation.
i get a really close shave in one pass, with no irritation or ingrown hairs yet. i should mention that i have fairly sensitive skin.
i'm convinced now that can cream is crap and that this old fashioned stuff is the real deal. oh, and it's cheaper!

um, wowAug 23, 2009
By MaasSql After reading advice and reviews on using a safety razor, my first choice for lather was Geo F. Trumper Violet Shaving Cream Jar. You can see my review here on Amazon. When I first received the package, I saw the receipt. 30 dollars! What was I thinking???? The cream awakened my primordial violetness. After a short while, the cream was all gone. I missed my violet smell. Gotta have lather, didn't I have some soap in a drawer somewhere? Something the wife bought on accident, thinking it was something useful (back when I was skipping the mortgage to buy cartridge razors WHAT A SCAM!)?? HMM. Well, I'll use this green box soap until I can get on the computer and Amazon and order more violet. ONE SHAVE later....WHAT WAS I THINKING? This soap stuff wAy rocks over the wonderful smelly stuff. BEST shaves yet. Yeah, but not exciting enough for me to write a review, until... I was browsing Amazon and saw the price. WOW. Why did I ever pay so much for that wonderful violet smell, when all I ever needed was something to give me a close shave?
Anyways:product's purpose=close shave. Fulfills its purpose at a price MUCH lower than competitors. It works / price = value. If you want something to smell, go play with your wife's lotions. Mine gets some great stuff from Avon.
I'm not gonna buy anymore though. NOPE. Don't need to. Been using it for months now, got plenty left. Will be back to Amazon in a year(?) to get the economy pack to last me till I'm old enough for somebody else to shave me.
Sure hope the company who makes this product is good to their employees. That's the only reason I can think of why someone wouldn't buy this product.
