Very Nice 3-Piece Dual Edge Safety Razor with Excellent BalanceDec 15, 2008
By weasprimus I've been using the Parker 91R now for a couple of months and have fallen in love with it. I stopped using Mach3 and other disposables completely and am currently using Derby Extra blades in the razor. The Parker and Derby combination cuts warm hairs like butter.
The razor is very capable of shaving exceptionally close to the skin. Up until shaving with the Parker 91R, I had never experienced such a close shave. My cheeks were so smooth my skin felt somewhat fake with lotion on it. Gave me a "what the?!?!" reaction the first time. Was accustomed to encountering stubble when using the Mach3 and other disposables. The closely shaven parts were extremely smooth.
The 7AM blades are good to go with at first since they are not quite as sharp as Derby Extras. The 7AM blades are therefore more forgiving when learning how to obtain the proper shaving angle and pressure. I recommend buying a quality badger hair brush and using shaving soap cakes for a really good shave. Following the shave up with some Hempz(tm) lotion leaves skin super soft and smooth. Hempz(tm) doesn't leave a greasy feeling like petroleum-laden lotions.
Some tips for the Parker 91R are...
(1) Use proper pressure. The less pressure against your face, the better. Do not press down like with Mach3 razors -- with a safety razor, you are trying to glide over the skin and cut the hairs, not the skin. Mach3 razors let people get away with bad shaving techniques at the expense of stubbly, non-close shaves.
(2) Use proper angle. The safest and easiest way to learn the proper angle is to start with the smooth, polished top portion of the head touching your skin. The handle will be sticking away from your face at a 90 degree angle -- straight away from your skin surface. While pulling the smooth part of the head across your face, slowly tilt the handle toward the cutting direction. You will hear hairs beginning to cut as you lower the handle -- keep it at the point at which you just start hearing the hairs being cut. That's a good starting point angle to use while learning. Further experimentation can be used once proper technique and feel is obtained...get a good feel for the razor first though.
(3) Use a good quality shaving soap or shaving gel. You want good lubrication and moisturizing properties.
(4) Shaving right after a hot shower makes hairs easier to cut.
(5) Shave with the hair grain (growth direction) at first and see if that gives a close enough shave. If more closeness is desired, re-lather and shave again across (sideways) or against the grain. Against the grain shaving causes ingrown hairs on some people. However, I have yet to get any nasty ingrown hairs from the Parker 91R and my skin is very sensitive.
(6) Take things slow and use short strokes. Don't shave like the guys on Mach3 commercials. It will throw the razor angle off the ideal position. Use short shaving strokes and take things slow -- you will be surprised at the results.
(7) Follow your shave up with some sort of lotion that isn't greasy and won't clog pores. I like Hempz(tm) lotion since it does a great job, smells fantastic, protects my freshly shaved skin, and disappears
without leaving any greasy feeling.
(8) Expect a few cuts the first week or so of shaving until you get a good feel for the razor and how dual-edge safety razors behave. The cuts are always superficial and stop bleeding without much fuss. Not like a cut from a disposable. After a few weeks or so of shaving, you should be able to shave without any cuts while still obtaining a very close shave.

I really like the fact that the Parker 91R allows me to shave multiple days in a row without turning my neck into a warzone. It leaves my problem spots smooth without ingrown hairs and massive amounts of skin irritation. A very fine razor for people like me with sensitive skin and those looking to save money by breaking free of the multi-blade disposable price wars.

Excellent RazorMar 28, 2009
By El Bob I've got sensitive skin and a tough thick beard. Two days without a shave and I start looking like a member of the Taliban. I went through the whole family of Gillette products. From the trac II through the atra onto the mach 3 and lastly the fusion. The fusion is probably best in the cartridge class, but even with the best in class, razor rash rode shotgun on many morning commutes. To add insult to injury, 5 o'clock shadow would come in around 2 pm. So some days I would have to shave again at lunch to look neat and trim for an afternoon client meeting. This was a real pain with no end in site. I started doing a bit of research and I found that my problem was caused by the shaving cream and razor.
Step One:
Ditch the canned shaving gels and creams. They are not worth the money. Go with a good quality shaving soap or fine shaving cream in a tub or jar, with a good badger hair brush. I personally use a Vulfix super badge hair brush with Taylor of Old Bond Street shaving cream and it's fantastic.
Step Two:
Buy a good DE razor and blades. I started with a Merkur adjustable and it was OK but not great. I then tried a Parker 22r next. OK as well, but the shaving profile is a bit aggressive and I find the handle a bit slippery when shaving in the shower. I picked up the 91R after reading the reviews and I have to say it's a great razor and I'm not going to switch.
It's heavy so there is no need to push down when shaving! The long handle with checking make it very easy to hold and guide while shaving in the shower. The shaving profile gives a really close shave but no razor rash or nicks.
Blades:
I like Sharp and Feather. Careful, these are really sharp blades, Feather also make surgical blades in the same factory, so they really understand sharp.
When you shave:
Touch the guard to your skin, slowly raise the handle until the blade touches usually about 35 degrees. Use short straight strokes following the grain of your beard. Don't push down on the razor, let it glide and cut the hair. After the first pass feel your face, if you still have stubble, re-lather and do a second pass across the grain. Avoid going directly against the grain. If you must. make it a very gentle 3rd pass. Use an aftershave moisturizer without alcohol to sooth the skin. Ask your wife, girlfriend, sister, etc. they will hook you up with a good one.
Lastly rinse the razor well after you shave. You can dip it in a bit of rubbing alcohol to drive the moisture out to protect the blade. When you break it down to change the blade, clean all three parts well. It only takes a minute or two.
This razor with your favorite blade and cream is years of inexpensive, environmentally friendly, super close, painless shaves. A really great way to start the day.

Not bad, but there are better.May 09, 2009

***Edit. After about a month with my Parker I purchased a Merkur 38c thru Amazon. Not because the Parker gave bad shaves, but I wanted to try out the 38c based on the amount of good reviews I read on sites such as the "Badger and Blade" forums. I was hesitant, because really how much could difference a razor make? Well it's a very significant difference. I would rate the Parker a 3 star after trying out the Merkur.
The build quality on the Merkur is much better. One thing I noticed on the Parker was that 1 out of 5 times I loaded it with a razor the alignment was off on the blade. If you look at it from top down you can see one side was way more exposed than the other. You can get it to fit right but just left me with an uneasy feeling. I will keep the parker as a backup but I think I found my razor with the Merkur. (using the red pack personnas as my razors, ditch the 7am blades.) For a good shave cream look for Proraso. (or the CO Bigelow shave cream from Bath and Body)
The parker is a decent shaver but for a little bit more money you can get an excellent razor that will last years. Cheers.

Don't be too quick to click...Jun 23, 2009
By Matthew G. This may be a fine razor for experienced wetshavers. However, first timers will be well advised to stay away. This can be an aggressive razor due to the wide gap. Also, I consider myself to have sensitive skin so I must have far more sensitive skin than these five-star reviewers.
I don't know how many stars to give this razor. It must be a fine razor for experienced shavers so I will avoid giving a rating. (Turns out that Amazon demands a rating. I will give it a middle of the road rating at three stars.)
I will quote a YouTube review that I just wrote:
"I just now used a vintage Gillette razor over the Parker 91R. Wow! The difference is like night and day. The Parker feels like I am shaving with a set of alligator teeth! I eventually have to put the razor down and step back from it like a dangerous weapon. New wetshavers: if you have not yet purchased a razor, please do yourself a solid and steer clear from that Parker 91R."

Better than multi-bladesMar 22, 2009
By Melissa Jones I was tired of buying expensive replacement blades for my Venus razor. $15 for four blades is ridiculous. So, I looked around online to see what other options were available. I kept hearing about guys' safety razors and how wonderful they were and I thought I'd give it a try. Why not? Anyway, this razor is has a solid, heavy feel. It'll last for a long while. The blades are sharp and easy to replace, and the shave is as close as a multi-blade one. You have to use a different technique with a safety razor, however; the blade head is held at a sharper angle. For those of you thinking this is too dangerous for legs and armpits, I have not cut myself once (use a shave cream or baby wash)! I love this razor and have thrown my disposable away for good.
