Life ChangingMar 14, 2009

didn't think something as simple as a razor could make such a difference, bought this so i could save money on replacement blades and the difference is absolutely amazing. Ive been using mach 3 for years and it always pulled, and the little rubber strip pushes away all the shaving gel. i shaved a 5 day beard in way less time and without all the pain and pulling of hairs. with my old razor I would have had to trim first and take a shower to even be able to get though my very tough facial hair. I have tossed the old mach3 in the garbage. as far as this individual product goes, its elegant well made and obviously effective. but even if you don't choose this one I would definitely give shaving with one of these type razors a try.

A very excellent razorOct 09, 2008
By Alan Lezak This razor is a fine instrument. It has the correct weight to just glide over your face. No need to apply any pressure. It is easy to open and change blades and is easy to clean. I think the word instrument really conveys the quality of this razor.

Just Friggen AwesomeDec 23, 2009
By W. Neal My first razor was a Mach 3 that Gillette sent me 10 yrs ago when I turned 18. I've never had much facial hair and I've generally been able to get away without shaving for about 5-6 days before needing to do anything about it. Additionally, I hated the process so I continued to use my Mach 3 until about 3 yrs ago. I upgraded to the Gillette Fusion because it had a single straight blade on the back and I found myself using that for almost my entire shave ... and then, I saw an article on Lifehacker ([...]) and thought there might be something to it. Since I'd already been shaving with just "one" blade, why not go for the full face-carving action? So I did some research, poked around, read reviews (check out [...] for just about any review out there) and finally settled on this one since it was within my price range and it seemed like I would like the 4in handle better than the standard 3in.
Things I noticed right away:
* Solid construction, feels like a well made tool in your hand. No clanking or anything like that.
* Size is wonderful for someone like me with large hands
* The heft makes is so you can really feel it in your hands and know how it's sitting on your face, but it's not so heavy that after doing 3 passes, you're building a pop-eye arm
First shave tools:
* This razor
* Freebie blades that came with it
* Cheapo unbranded soap I bought at Walgreens
* Cheapo unbranded brush I bought at Walgreens
Things I noticed after my first shave:
* Cleaning was way easier than any cartridge razor I've ever used. No issue with getting hair caught in between the blades and creating that "chunking" feeling when it moves
* Even though I hadn't worked up a super good lather the first pass (again, total n00b), it still glided over my skin without issue. I attribute this to the high chrome finish
* Grip was a little slippery at first; however, adjusting my hand further down towards the gnarls near the bottom solved that issue.
* Holy crap, I was able to shave and it didn't feel like I was ripping hairs out of my face for a change
* Holy crap, my face was ridiculously smooth afterwards (3 passes - with, across, and against the grain as recommended by the Internets)
* Holy crap, my girlfriend approves
* Holy crap, I don't think I can ever go back to my Fusion again
Kudos to the old skool crowd for showing me the way.

Slippery when wetJun 02, 2009

I just switched from mach 3 blades and canned shave creme, I am happy with the results, though there is a learning curve involved. My only complaint is the handle could use some better grip design, I keep having to dry the handle and my hand. I also switched to mug soap and enjoy that change. The Parker 90R long handle Razor is a very well made shaving machine.

Why did I use a Mach 3 for so long?Dec 10, 2009
By Matt G. This is the first product review I've written on Amazon. Nothing I bought here before has really inclined me to take the trouble, but this little razor, well - it's almost life-changing. Bold statement to make for something as insignificant as a shaving implement, but it's warranted in this case.
I used to look at shaving as a necessary annoyance. It wasn't pleasant, but my wife doesn't like a beard so I made myself do it. But being as annoyance, I usually slacked off in doing it which resulted in my shaving once a week, if that (my beard doesn't grow terribly fast). Which resulted in my usually sporting a few days' worth of beard, an unkempt look. However, once I picked up this razor, all that changed. Why? To put it simply, what used to be a necessary annoyance has become a pleasure I look forward to. Seriously. I now wish my beard grew faster so I could shave daily.
Using a safety razor necessitates a few other things: a good shaving soap/cream (I recommend the Omega shaving soap available from amazon), a good brush (badger hair is best), and using an aftershave is advised, if not necessary. All these things feel great on the skin and are just plain *fun* to use. It also necessitates that you pay attention to what you're doing rather than just going through the motions. However, the reward is a shave that's much closer to anything you've ever managed with the multi-blade razors while at the same time feeling easier on your face. No razor burn, just smooth skin.
Last but not least, hell, using the safety razor/brush combo just makes you feel... male.
Now, about this particular razor:
- Quality: very good. It's heavy and feels like a solid, quality tool in your hand. Doesn't rust and is easy to rinse.
- Design: excellent. The butterfly design makes it easy to replace blades and remove them to rinse after shaving. The shape of the razor helps find the correct angle for shaving. It's hard to describe, but to put it in simplest terms it just fits naturally: placing it against your face in the way that feels natural ends up being just the right angle.
- Cuts and hacking up your face: complete myth. It's not difficult at all to shave without ever nicking yourself (I think I've done it twice in 2 months).
Note about multi-blade razors:
They're dominant in the market not because they're superior to the safety razors, but due to profit margins. Anyone can make razor blades for safety razors and as a result, they're available for around $0.10. However, the Mach3, etc. cartridges are only made by their manufacturers and by controlling their manufacture, they're able to jack up the price - they can cost over $3.00 each. Makes sense from a profit standpoint.
