5Excellent way to start with a StraightJun 10, 2009
By Christopher Lee
I received my DOVO Shavette over the weekend, and I am impressed. I got my first straight razor shave from my barber on my wedding day, and since that day in April I knew I wanted one. The real things are super expensive, especially for a guy like me wanting to try it out. So, I found the Shavette on amazon, and after researching it further (and clearing it with my wife), I ordered myself one. It was economical, and perfect for a beginner like me. No strops or hones to worry about, just slide in a new blade and off you go. I shaved with it the evening I got it (I work 3rd shift). I was surprised at how easy it was, if you take your time. Research how to shave with one properly (you can find videos on youtube) and take your time. This is not something you can rush through! This baby is sharp as anything I've ever seen. I nicked myself a couple places on the first shave, but no worse than I do when I use my Fusion. You will have to learn to shave with both hands, so you can see in the mirror what you are doing, but it's not all that hard. Just take your time. Today I cut myself decently on my right jaw, but that was my fault...I rushed in that spot and in so doing I cut myself. Overall, I am extremely happy with this razor, and I look forward to using it as often as I can.

3Razor blades good, shavette regularSep 25, 2010
By M. Tarre
The derby razor blades are top quality but the Dovo shavette is not good at all; they do not mix well. When the razor is inserted it does not lock in the position so when you're shaving the blades goes into the holder and you have to reposition the blades during shaving what makes it totally useless.

2Cheap for a reasonJul 11, 2009
By Andrew J. Horton
This thing tore up my neck something fierce. Buy a real straight or even better, buy a old school safety razor.
A nice Merkur Hd Classic "barber Pole" Long Safety Razor-#38c is very ideal. The blades are so damn cheap - goodbye forever Gillette!!!

4Great for the priceDec 15, 2010

My first impression when I received this product was that it looked cheap. It definitely doesn't seem like something that costs between 20 and 50 dollars. It looks like something you would buy at a gas station for <$10 for a quick shave. It's made of aluminum and plastic and is extremely lightweight. It's hard to get a sense of what it looks like from the pictures on amazon. Wetshaving.net has a review and better pictures:
[...]

That said, it's worth the price given how many shaves you can get from the shavette and the 300 blades. And while the shavette may seem simple and cheap, it's well designed and has lasted me several years without rusting, breaking, or loosening. The only part that seems problematic is the red plastic piece which opens so you can place the razor into it. It appears like it could break easily, but, like I said, I've had it for years and that hasn't happen. The plastic must just be of a good quality. So, congrats to Dovo.

Also, this razor will not cut up your face if you use it properly. Reviews that say otherwise reflect more so on the reviewer than the product itself. Do some research before using this straight razor. There's a technique to it, which is part of the attraction. You WILL cut yourself, however. Which isn't to say you'll cut yourself frequently or severely, but you're bound to get nicks every once in a while. Most of the time these nicks will be invisible, but you'll be able to feel them. I find that the likelihood of this occurring increases if I shave over the same spot several times or if I shave against the grain (which I don't recommend anyway). I use a styptic pencil to stop the bleeding (can be purchased at wal mart or walgreens for about $1). The worst cuts I've had have not been any worse than the kinds you can get from moving a modern razor laterally across your face. If you have anyone in your life who's worried about you cutting your throat open, just tell them to calm down, it's not going to happen.
